Travel Guide to Kenyan Safaris
If you want to discover all that Africa has to offer within one country Kenya is the place to go. Kenya has some of the highest mountains, the biggest herds, the fiercest predators, tropical beaches, coral reefs, deserts, rainforests, loads of flamingos, the Maasai warriors and bustling cities. There is so much to see and do – you’re bound to visit more than once.
The Kenyan Coast borders the warm Indian Ocean. Many a tourist has combined the excitement of a wildlife safari with a few tranquil days at the beach. The coastline has stunning coral reefs and a rich trading history. Places like Mombasa or the Lamu Archipelago still bear the marks of centuries of trade with the Middle East and even China. Strolling past the historic buildings of Mombasa Old Town, Lamu Town or the Takwa Ruins is as close as you will get to time travelling.
The people of Kenya are as diverse as the landscapes. Arabian tradesman and British colonialists have left their footprints and immigrants from other British colonies such as India have added to the mix. The population consists of more than 40 groups and most of the locals are fluent in Swahili and English. The predominant religion is Christianity, but indigenous beliefs and Islam are also well represented. One of the minor but most prominent ethnic groups are the Maasai, herdsmen and warriors who are easily recognized by their red robes and elaborate tribal jewellery. The Maasai are also know for killing lions with nothing but a spear and defying gravity during tribal dances, but that is only the surface of this amazing culture.
